VIDEO: 2006 Paris Motor Show Booth Tour - General Motors December 28, 2006
Filed under: Concept Cars, Euro, Videos, Paris Motor Show, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GM
Here”s the second video in our five-part series of booth tours at the 2006 Paris Motor Show, and this time we focus on General Motors. I”ll say again this our first time producing video and I”m disappointed in myself that we didn”t capture footage of more vehicles from General Motors and its brands sold in Europe, but we did get the big one, which is the Chevy WTCC Ultra Concept. We also padded the video with footage of the Opel Antara, Opel CorsaVan and the Cadillac SRX”s new fancy interior. Hope you enjoy watching these as much as we do making them and keep your eyes peeled for more. BTW - If you like the video and the work that we”re doing, please support us by voting for the video on the new Netscape. All you have to do is click the up arrow at the top of the video window. If you aren”t registered at the new Netscape, now is as good a time as any. Thanks! Part 1: VIDEO: 2006 Paris Motor Show - VW / Audi / Lamborghini Booth Tour

Kia breaks ground in Georgia, rolls back sales target
Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing, Kia
We just talked about the fact that Kia and Hyundai were scaling back sales projections for 2006, now we are learning that production will be adjusted as well. After a series of high-level scandals and ensuing postponements, Kia Motors Corp. finally broke ground on its Georgia facility today. And at the company”s official groundbreaking ceremony today, it announced some changes. Most important was the announcement about where the new vehicles produced at this plant will be headed. While Kia had originally projected U.S. sales of 800,000 vehicles a year in 2010, they are now expecting sales to be closer to 650,000 units, according to Kia CEO Chung Eui Sun. Chung and his father, Hyundai-Kia Group Chairman Chung Mong Koo, participated in the ceremonial shovel lift at Kia”s first U.S. plant today. The younger Chung said that the billion dollar plant will likely ship its excess production to Latin American markets, possibly including a new-to-Kia market, Mexico. Kia CEO Chung added that production had been tabbed to begin in September 2009, but November 2009 looks more likely now. Len Hunt, Kia Motors America executive vice president and COO, pointed out that although Kia has only moved 222,000 so far this year, it hopes to reach 300,000: “It will be a bit of a stretch, but the 300,000 target would be psychologically important,” Hunt said. “The dealers are really excited that Kia is investing in America, because that”s what we”re continually asking them to do. It says to them that we”re here to stay.” [Source: Automotive News, sub req]

Audi R10 completes perfect ALMS season at Laguna Seca
Filed under: Motorsports, Audi
The thrilling and historic first season for the Audi R10 TDI in the American Le Mans Series has concluded with Audi”s two-car team scoring a 1-2 victory, its third of the year, at this season”s final race at Laguna Seca. The victory caps an eight-race all-out win streak and mark”s the first time an ALMS car has gone undefeated in its debut season. Though Audi did win every race outright this season, the two races occurring in between the 12 Hours of Sebring season opener and 24 Hours of Le Mans were ran by the R10 TDI”s predecessor, the R8, that won both. Much credit should be given to the R10 TDI itself, not just for the win at Laguna Seca but for the entire winning season, as its extremely frugal use of fuel (for a 650-horsepower race car) often gave its four drivers a big competitive advantage. The drivers themselves, however, which include Allan McNish / Dindo Capello and Emanuele Pirro / Frank Biela, deserve a good deal of credit, as well, along with their teams. Most races throughout the season were never in the bag for the Audi team, each win being earned through excellent driving, pit management and the confidence that comes from piloting these Audi-engineered racers. Congrats to Audi for the unbeaten season and Capello and McNish for winning the Drivers” Title. Check out a full gallery of R10 TDI pics at Laguna Seca here. [Source: ALMS via Fourtitude]

More details on the new EVO and Impreza
Filed under: Detroit Auto Show, Sedans/Saloons, Euro, Tokyo Motor Show, Hatchbacks, Mitsubishi, Subaru
The Scooper of Cars was kind enough to scan the latest cover of Autocar, which shows the new face of Subaru (maybe) and reveals a few other nuggets of knowledge about our favorite road-going rally cars. The new nose of the Subaru is a welcomed photochop for those of us who never particularly warmed-up the current model”s snout. Autocar is confirming what we”ve already know — that the new Impreza will likely come in a five-door hatch model, with styling that is more “Europeanized.” Motivation will come from the tried-and-true 2.5-liter boxer-four that is currently under the hood of both the WRX models and their STI upgraded counterparts. We”re sure a few extra ponies will find their way under the hood, along with some new all-wheel-drive wizardry. On the Mitsubishi Evolution side of things, the article confirms that a production-ready version will make its debut at the North American International Auto Show (or the Detroit Auto Show to the rest of us) this January, with the full production model being unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in October of 2007.
