TruScene Keeps An Eye On Your Car For You July 27, 2006

By David Ponce
You’re sure to appreciate how useful this item is if you’ve ever been in an accident that wasn’t your fault, or better yet, if some asshole rammed your car while parked, then took off without leaving his number. The TruScene camera hooks up to your rear view mirror, and films whatever is in front. It is constantly filming, saving everything into a 30 second buffer, discarding anything past that. If a sudden jolt, or bump is detected by the device, then it saves those 30 seconds into its internal memory, giving you a view of the incident, and the moments preceding it. Come inside for a video demonstration.
There is no pricing at the moment, and it’s slated to hit the market in Autumn 2006.

Soundbombs July 26, 2006
By Andrew Liszewski
Soundbombs are designed to be a sort of non-visual graffiti for artists who have lost their inspiration with the spray can. The small spherical device has two speakers on the outside capable of recording and playing back any message or sound when triggered by a built-in motion detector.
Suggested uses for the Soundbomb include a welcoming greeting at the entrane of a store or a warning of poor service or bad food outside of a restaurant. Basically anywhere you want your message to be heard but are too lazy (or scared) to stand and deliver it yourself.
The best part of the Soundbombs is their availability. Since it is really an art project the designers have decided to make the devices very exclusive and can only be obtained after being approved by them. From their website:
“One can apply for the purchase of a Soundbomb – only those who deserve a Soundbomb, get a Soundbomb! if one is elected, he/she obtains an unique “accoustic” email addresse”
I don’t know what criteria causes an applicant to be approved or rejected but if you’d like to apply there’s a link on their website to do so.

Mini iPod Shuffle Clone
By Andrew Liszewski
It’s been at least a couple of years since the iPod Shuffle was released to the masses and it makes sense that by this time even the technology in Apple’s tiniest MP3 player can be reduced to an even smaller form factor.
But while Apple seems to have given up further development on the Shuffle it seems that there are plenty of other companies willing to make clones that have improved on their design. The SC-MP001W MP3 player from SunConnection of Japan uses SD or MMC memory cards for storage making it infinitely upgradeable and also has a built-in USB 2.0 connection so you don’t need a seperate card reader to transfer music. Its rechargeable battery is supposed to last up to 8 hours which is really not that long but given the size of the player the battery itself can’t be that large to begin with.
The SC-MP001W will be only available in white when it hits Japanese stores and will cost about $26.

By David Ponce
It’s funny. Just the other day, I was reading this fascinating article about just how horrible the web looked in 1996, and I find it somewhat amusing that by sheer coincidence, I have come across one site that still looks like it belongs there. See, there’s this company, Meteorite Guitar Picks, that makes guitar picks from, well, meteorites. So, yeah, let’s say you have this friend that plays in a band, and he’s got all his gear already and you don’t know what to buy him for his birthday. Well, here’s an idea: a guitar pick made from a meteorite! There seems to be three models, and they range between $110 and $135. It’s neat stuff, really.
You should however give the site a visit, if only to gawk at the horror of blasphemous web design. Kind of makes you want to buy a bunch of picks, just so they can afford a decent designer.

Silentmaxx ST11-PRO Sound Muffling PC Case

By David Ponce
There are those among us who don’t fully appreciate the sweet ratchety melody of a hard drive head nervously seeking disparate sectors, or the low calming whir of a poorly designed cooling fan. These people prefer silence over electromechanical beats, and for them, the Silentmaxx ST11-PRO might do the trick.
It’s a simple $160 PC case that features sound isolating panels on the inside. There’s a ventilation grille on top, and enough room for up to three hard drives.

Refuel and Rearm In Mid-Flight July 25, 2006
By Andrew Liszewski
The air forces of the world have already solved the problem of fuel-thirsty fighter planes with the ability to refuel the craft in mid-flight. The US Air Force’s research lab is now looking into a similar method to rearming their planes in mid-flight too.
A cargo plane would have a telescoping boom extending from its rear that incorporated a looped conveyor belt to move bombs and missiles from the supply plane to the end of the boom. The fighter plane would then fly over the boom until special optical sensors confirmed the weapon was properly aligned and could be automatically attached to the underside of the craft. Of course spilling a few drops of fuel during a mid-flight refill is not a big issue but the same thing happening with bombs or missiles could result in a bit of a problem.

Walit Illuminating Wallet
By Andrew Liszewski
I stopped carrying a wallet in the ‘miniature filing cabinet’ sense of the word many years ago and haven’t looked back. For those who still feel the need to carry every single credit card, business card, membership card and whatever else in their wallets there’s at least a high-tech option for you.
The Walit uses an electroluminescent strip on the inside of the wallet’s large pocket theoretically making it easier to distinguish a receipt from actual cash when you’re digging around at night. The illuminating strip is powered by 4 replaceable watch batteries and the wallet itself is made of ’sexy’ leather as the website puts it.
The Walit is currently available from GadgetStorm.com for £14.95.

The Tourist Remover

By David Ponce
Tourists can be a pesky bunch. They’re always milling about, pointing at things, looking somewhat lost, and most importantly, getting in the way of you taking a nice clean tourist-free shot of that special landmark. Well, a new service called Tourist Remover can take care of them for you.
No, unfortunately, they won’t physically “remove” them; they’ll simply erase their digital trace from your pictures. All you have to do is take a bunch of pictures of your landmark from the same spot, send them the pics, and they’ll perform the Photoshop magic for you. Best of all, the service is free.

Xylon Bikes Make Beautiful Wooden Bicycle Frames

By David Ponce
Certainly, for most serious cycling enthusiasts out there, shaving a few pounds off their bike’s weight is a good thing. Then, there are those for whom adding a pound or ten makes perfect sense, so long as it confers upon them the title of Most Awesomest Bike-Frame Owner. These people would undoubtedly try to purchase a wooden frame from Xylon Bikes.
While we’re not quite certain these models are for sale anywhere, they do actually exist. The designers have kept
the number of metal parts to the minimum, the frames are hand built to exacting specifications using state of the art adhesives, aeronautical grade plywood, and seasoned hardwoods each chosen for their natural beauty and mechanical properties.
There are four models, and since we don’t know whether or not they’re for sale, we have no idea how much they may cost.
