Les Lunettes Video Orange (??) December 15, 2005
Over a decade and probably 3 million episodes later, good ol” Geordi LaForge is finally going to get an updated visor. This visor can display video/images and has headphones. It can connect to devices via a cable and costs around $360. Why don’t I know anything else? Oh yeah, because I”m not French. Any French-fluent readers out there willing to do a little translation so we can figure out some more info regarding this thing? I can promise a wonderful time with Travis, the belly-rubbing intern, in exchange.

Samsung i300 Hard Drive Phone
Huzzah! The time has finally come for hard drives to be integrated into cell phones, beginning with the Samsung i300. This phone is available on the O2 network and features a phone (!!), 1.3-megapixel digital camera and an MP3 player. Best of all, there”s plenty of storage space with a 3GB hard drive. It is available now on the O2 network, which is unfortunate because the O2 network is European, but we can hope this comes stateside soon.

Mobile Internet for the Troops
Defense Tech is reporting that a new wireless networking system for the troops should be available sooner than expected. The system hooks up with cellular and satellite connections and allows soldiers to connect to the Pentagon”s information networks. I guess that means I will have to enlist—the only reason I haven’t yet is because I would miss out on my fantasy football. Originally this network was slated for a 2009 release, but testing has shown that this system will provide immediate benefits for the troops and can be ready to go early in 2007. Happy surfing, soldier!

Cingular Scores Sopranos
![]()
Chalk one up for Cingular Wireless, which today announced a multi-year exclusive deal with HBO to get clips of favorite TV shows, including The Sopranos, sent to mobile phones. The cellphone company, which is getting ready to ratchet up a high-speed wireless network from 16 markets to 100 by next year, believes this will encourage cell phone users to purchase its service plans rather than Sprint”s. The one problem I see is the word “clips.” I don”t particularly want clips. I want a whole show. Start-to-finish. Whether or not this is just a tease for things to come, I don”t know. Assuming we get true 3G high-speed mobile service soon, I would have to guess things will only get better.

Tech For Babies: Smarter Thinking or Impeding Brain Growth?

With the huge number of products available for young children today (think LeapFrog), there hasn”t been much talk about whether giving your kids electronic learning aids is helping their mental growth or stunting it. To help parents with some of their buying decisions, a report released this week from the Kaiser Family Foundation, “A Teacher in the Living Room? Educational Media for Babies, Toddlers and Pre-schoolers” indicates there”s no answer to this question as of yet. Thanks for nuffin.
“The market is expanding rapidly, with all kinds of brand-new product lines for little kids,” said Vicky Rideout, vice president of the Kaiser Foundation. “But the research hasn”t advanced much. There really isn”t any outcomes-based research on these kinds of products and their effects on young children, and there doesn”t seem to be any theoretical basis for saying that kids under 2 can learn from media.”
Well, that”s encouraging. So if you”re in the habit of dropping your baby in front of a video so you can take a quick shower, you may want to think again. Or just stay dirty. And here”s a big surprise: Claire Lerner, a child-development expert at Zero to Three, a nonprofit advocacy group that includes information about brain development on its Web site, thinks being around other babies without technology is a better learning experience than any technology. Ya think, Claire? So, just a heads-up next time you hit the Toys “R” Us.

Solarjo Power Purse Charges iPod, Tampons

This one is for those ladies with iPods. We know you shove enough crap in your purse already, so why bother cramming a charger in there when you know it still won”t fit? The solution is the Power Purse. This design concept is a purse with individual solar panels on the outside and a USB charger on the inside for powering all those gadgets you have stuffed away in there. Developed by college kiddo Joe Hynek, the purse is not only designed to power devices, but also to clock in at under $300, so it”s semi-affordable.

Denver Hyatt’s eCheck-In
Those e-ticketing kiosks at the airport changed my life—never waiting in line to check-in for a flight again. So, it only makes sense that the same idea is now being applied to hotels. The Hyatt Regency Denver at Colorado Convention Center, opening next week, will let guests swipe a credit card into a kiosk and retrieve the room key. The room has a 32-inch flat screen TV that can be used to order room service, and there is your own personal iPod provided as well. Now, about that free WiFi you”ve been requesting, I”m afraid… NOT.
CBS 4 Denver is also reporting:
The Hyatt”s technology will also help the employees at the hotel.A special high-tech radio allows them to communicate through text messaging and converts Spanish into English and vice versa.
Special high-tech radio? Let”s see…two-way talkie, text messaging—sounds like a cellphone to me. The translation tech? Sounds like a human being. What am I missing here?
