Hawking Dish: Steroids for WiFi December 16, 2005

hawkwind.jpgThis odd-looking gadget from Hawking doesn”t pick up alien signals, but it does let you boost any WiFi signal by up to a hard-to-believe 300 percent. The HWU8DD Hi-Gain USB Wireless-G Dish Adapter connects to either a computer or laptop using Wireless-B or Wireless-G network and a USB connection, and uses dish technology and Hawking”s Signal Strength LED Indicator to find the strongest and best signal around. You”ll also getWEP, WPA, and WPA2 security and a directional antenna that concentrates wireless signals away from computer components to avoid signal interference. And it only costs $69.

Toshiba Brings Peace of Mind To Simple Cellphone Users

toshiba phone.jpgIf you”ve ever gotten a desperate call from your parents, from their land line, begging you to help them figure out the new cellphone they just purchased, you”ll be happy to hear about Toshiba”s V50T. An easy-to-use cellphone with something called “simple modes” built-in, you can personalize your menu to only show features you use (like making and receiving calls), and dump the rest. You can also make the type bigger for easy reading and for kids and/or teenagers, you can actually limit the amount of talktime and phone numbers that can be dialled. I”d say that”s a score for frustrated parents paying way too much in overage fees. Minimal features include a 1.3 megapixel camera, miniSD card slot and 2 TFT displays. Comes in 4 colors.

Bendy Microprocessor on Plastic

1081598043.jpgNot much other then a report right now, but it looks like TDK has teamed up with Japanese Semiconductor Energy Laboratory to make a bendable microprocessor. The transistors will be made on glass first, then transferred to plastic. The processor will also have wireless capabilities and built-in signal encryption.

Bluebird PIDION BM-200 Packed with Acronyms and Other Impressive Features

bm200_6.jpgWe”re not really sure why in God”s name Windows CE is still around and being used, but apparently Bluebird found a good use for it in their new PIDION BM-200 phone. Bring on the acronyms: this phone doubles as a PMP with GPS capabilities with a 520MHZ Intel PXA 270 CPU inside (which, when I think about my desktop PC from 2000, is kind of stunning), a 2.8″ TFT touchscreen display at 240×320 pixels, 64MB of RAM, Bluetooth, WiFi, and a whole lot more. It even has a 2MP camera built-in and miniSD for additional storage. Worried about getting this device because you”re a PocketPC fan? Well, it emulates PocketPC to run your apps, so you”re golden. Oh yeah, it”s a phone too, remember. Though Windows CE isn”t the greatest OS around, the features on the BM-200 make up for it. No word yet on pricing for this sexy beast.

QRIO: Sees the Future with Third Eye

sony_13.jpg Ah yes, the third eye. We”ve all dreamed of having one, though where we”d put it is still up in the air. So it”s nice to know Sony”s toddler-sized QRIO humanoid robot now has this distinct advantage—smack in the middle of its forehead. The main point of this advancement? To be able to see several people at once, but focus in on only one. So yeah, it still dances, talks, makes general merriment, but now the QRIO can connect, man. This new, improved QRIO was introduced at an exhibit on intelligent machines in the Japanese shopping district of Ginza, where he also put on quite a show flirting with the girls (and singling out one particular girl to freak out) and stacking blocks according to color and size. That”s quite an extra eye Sony. Will it come standard on the PS3?

Tekkeon OLED Bluetooth Headset

ezTalker_1.jpgWhat”s that, Timmy? A Bluetooth headset that is actually different from every other one out there? Oh, and it still looks doofy as hell? Wowz0r! The small 64×48 pixel OLED screen displays the caller”s number, but better yet, it can store numbers and also keeps track of the last 15 received calls. Of course to make a call with it you would have to remove the headset from your ear and dial, but that is so much easier than the painstaking process of reaching into your pocket for the actual phone. This also comes with a rechargeable battery that provides 120 hours of standby time and 8 hours of talk time. Only downside: it would be awkward and difficult to enjoy my favorite porn fetish sex line in public without people knowing.

R.I.P. FireWire

firewire-logo.jpgSince the FireWire-less video iPod launch, Apple”s FireWire web page has managed to slip down into the depths of purgatory. And, rumors are surfacing that the new Intel-based Powerbooks will lose FireWire 400 completely and only keep one FireWire 800 port for the video editors. Say it ain”t so Apple, say it ain”t so.
